The WORD today (see http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/021716.cfm)
reminds me that God calls us to repentance, and that a sincere
repentance involves real action.
During
confession, God forgives our sins. And after confession, the priest tells us
that our sins are forgiven, and reminds us to go and sin no more. However, we
should not take confession lightly. Even though God forgives us every time, we
should make the effort not to sin again. Impossible, but we should give our
best effort. For if we are really sorry as we confess, we will do our best not
to repeat the sins anymore.
Real repentance
involves action.
This
lent, God calls us to repentance. He is understanding, as we see in the first
reading. Initially, Jonah did not follow God's call. He ran away from God. But
when Jonah repented and apologized, he was given another chance. And because his
repentance is real, he acted on it. He obeyed God, and he was used
mightily to save a lot of people. Same with the Ninevites. God planned to
destroy them. But when they showed real repentance and acted on it, God gave
them another chance.
God
is patient. He
gives us different opportunities to repent. Different chances to
repent. But when we decide to repent, it should be real. It should be accompanied by concrete
actions to show God we are serious. Then God can use us and bless
us.
May
we be moved to real repentance, and may we pray for guidance in concretizing
that repentance.
Father God,
Thank you for
today. Thank you for another day to live. Thank you for another chance to
experience your love and forgiveness. Lord, I am sorry for my sins. Sorry for
loving myself more than I love you. Sorry for doing what I want, not what you
want. Sorry for ignoring you. Help me to truly repent. Guide me and lead me
into making concrete actions to show you I am sorry. Help me live right and
pleasing to you. Amen.

Reading 1 Jon 3:1-10
The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time:
“Set out for the great city of Nineveh,
and announce to it the message that I will tell you.”
So Jonah made ready and went to Nineveh,
according to the LORD’s bidding.
Now Nineveh was an enormously large city;
it took three days to go through it.
Jonah began his journey through the city,
and had gone but a single day’s walk announcing,
“Forty days more and Nineveh shall be destroyed,”
when the people of Nineveh believed God;
they proclaimed a fast
and all of them, great and small, put on sackcloth.
When the news reached the king of Nineveh,
he rose from his throne, laid aside his robe,
covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in the ashes.
Then he had this proclaimed throughout Nineveh,
by decree of the king and his nobles:
“Neither man nor beast, neither cattle nor sheep,
shall taste anything;
they shall not eat, nor shall they drink water.
Man and beast shall be covered with sackcloth and call loudly to God;
every man shall turn from his evil way
and from the violence he has in hand.
Who knows, God may relent and forgive, and withhold his blazing wrath,
so that we shall not perish.”
When God saw by their actions how they turned from their evil way,
he repented of the evil that he had threatened to do to them;
he did not carry it out.

the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation
and she will condemn them,
because she came from the ends of the earth
to hear the wisdom of Solomon,
and there is something greater than Solomon here.
At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation
and condemn it,
because at the preaching of Jonah they repented,
and there is something greater than Jonah here.”
