More Than Just Knowing

The WORD today reminds me that it is not enough to just merely know God.

In this world, connections are powerful. Knowing a high ranking law enforcement officer or a government official can sometimes get people out of some problems in traffic and maybe even bigger ones. Knowing top executives in companies may guarantee a high position or business deals. Knowing high government officials can get you vaccinated or admitted to hospitals for covid.  This works in the world, but not with God.

What works in this world do not always work with God.

In the gospel, we see Jesus proclaiming God’s word. He was teaching in the synagogue. That time, the people still did not know who Jesus was. However, someone knew. We see that the demon inside the man knew who Jesus was. He proclaimed it. He told people about it. But Jesus was not pleased with it, and instead told the demon to be quiet and come out of the person.

Merely knowing Jesus is not enough.

Jesus knew the intention of the demon for telling who he really was – to disrupt his work in proclaiming God’s kingdom. And though he proclaimed with the lips who Jesus was, of course the heart is not one with it. His actions are not consistent with what the lips say. Knowing and saying who is Jesus is not as important as living it through our lives. If we know with our lips that Jesus is the Holy One of God, then we should also live our lives proclaiming that truth.

We all know who Jesus is. We all know who God is. That is a good thing, but not enough. God wants us to go further. God wants us not only to tell the world with our lips, but more importantly, by our lives. We need more than knowing him, but have a personal relationship with him as well. A personal relationship that will move us into action.

Hindi dapat puro realizations lang. We know Jesus. We have experienced him in our lives. But it should not stop there. Knowing and realizing God’s love and power and blessings are not enough. We should spread them as well. We should proclaim them as well. We should love others. We should be a blessing to others. We should remind others that God is well alive in this pandemic crisis we are in.

Do I know who God is? How do I tell people about it? Do I tell others with my words and proclamations? Do I also tell people about God through my actions and my life? What is the best way to proclaim God? In this pandemic, how can I proclaim God and share him to others?

May we be challenged and inspired to go beyond lip service and tell who Jesus is by our lives.

Father God,
Thank you for today. Thank you for another day to live. thank you for another day to love and serve you. thank you for the reminder. Thank you for reminding me that knowing you is not enough. Thank you for reminding me that telling others about you is not enough. Sorry for the times I think it is enough to just know you and tell others about you. Sorry for stopping at that level. I ask that you Help me live my faith and knowledge of you. Help me build a personal relationship with you. May it move me into action. may I share you to others not just with my words, but with my actions and through my life as well. Amen.

Blessed Day!

Tuesday of the Twenty-second Week in Ordinary Time

Lectionary: 432

Concerning times and seasons, brothers and sisters,
you have no need for anything to be written to you.
For you yourselves know very well
that the day of the Lord will come like a thief at night.
When people are saying, “Peace and security,”
then sudden disaster comes upon them,
like labor pains upon a pregnant woman,
and they will not escape.

But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness,
for that day to overtake you like a thief.
For all of you are children of the light
and children of the day.
We are not of the night or of darkness.
Therefore, let us not sleep as the rest do,
but let us stay alert and sober.
For God did not destine us for wrath,
but to gain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,
who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep
we may live together with him.
Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up,
as indeed you do.

Responsorial Psalm

R. (13) I believe that I shall see the good things of the Lord in the land of the living.
The LORD is my light and my salvation;
whom should I fear?
The LORD is my life’s refuge;
of whom should I be afraid?
R. I believe that I shall see the good things of the Lord in the land of the living.
One thing I ask of the LORD;
this I seek:
To dwell in the house of the LORD
all the days of my life,
That I may gaze on the loveliness of the LORD
and contemplate his temple.
R. I believe that I shall see the good things of the Lord in the land of the living.
I believe that I shall see the bounty of the LORD
in the land of the living.
Wait for the LORD with courage;
be stouthearted, and wait for the LORD.
R. I believe that I shall see the good things of the Lord in the land of the living.

Alleluia

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
A great prophet has arisen in our midst
and God has visited his people.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Jesus went down to Capernaum, a town of Galilee.
He taught them on the sabbath,
and they were astonished at his teaching
because he spoke with authority.
In the synagogue there was a man with the spirit of an unclean demon,
and he cried out in a loud voice,
“What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?
Have you come to destroy us?
I know who you are–the Holy One of God!”
Jesus rebuked him and said, “Be quiet! Come out of him!”
Then the demon threw the man down in front of them
and came out of him without doing him any harm.
They were all amazed and said to one another,
“What is there about his word?
For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits,
and they come out.”
And news of him spread everywhere in the surrounding region.

Not Entitled

The WORD today reminds me that  I am not entitled to God’s blessings.

Some children feel that they are entitled to receive from their parents whatever they want, at whatever cost. Some people feel entitled to receive blessings from their family members that are more financially capable than them. Some breadwinners feel that they should always have their way just because they are the ones who contribute the most. Some people feel they should be getting the promotion at work because they are working so hard. Some people think that because they do good and serve God, they are entitled to receive more blessings, that they will receive whatever they ask from God. This is not a good attitude. We should not have this attitude l, especially towards God.

No matter what we do, we are not entitled to God's blessings.

In the gospel we see the people expecting their town-mate Jesus do amazing things and miracles there. They did not ask, they expected. Not because they had faith, but they believed they deserved it since Jesus was from their town. Jesus was one of them. Clearly, Jesus tells us that our relationship or affinity do not entitle us to such things.

We are blessed because of one thing - God's love.

God loves us so much that he blesses us. He protects us. He gives us a lot. We sometimes take these blessings for granted, and we want more. We expect more for whatever reason. We are reminded today not to be like this. We are reminded to be aware and thankful. And these should move us into action - sharing his blessings to others.

Even if we so good and follow him, even if we serve others and obey his commandments, we should not feel entitled to God’s blessings. In another parable, Jesus said that servants who do their master’s wishes should not be rewarded, because they are just doing what they are supposed to do. They should not be praised and be recognized. Just like doing good work in the office, you are paid and expected to do just that. It does not give you the right to expect and demand blessings and favors. God, our creator, master and Father, gave us everything we have. It is just right to give him what we have and to serve him. We should not feel entitled, even if we are living better lives serving him than others.

During this pandemic, we should also share our blessings. We are not entitled, but God continues to bless us. As such, it would be a great way to thank God by sharing his blessings to others who are not so blessed, or others who may not also be entitled to these blessings.

In what ways do I have a sense of entitlement? Am I expecting to be treated a certain way just because of what I do, give or say? Do I feel I deserve all the blessings i have because of what I do? How can I show God that I am thankful for his blessings? What is God telling me today?

May we remember that no matter what we do, we are not entitled to God's blessings, and we should never act as is we deserve these things. His love is the only reason we have so much. May we realize it and show our gratitude by sharing these things to others.

Father God,
Thank you for today. Thank you for another day to live. Thank you for the reminder. Thank you for another week to love and serve you. Lord, sorry for the times I feel entitled to your blessings. Sorry for the times I act entitled, that I deserve these things. Lord, I do not. I know it is only because of your love that I have these things. Help me always be aware, and show you my gratitude by loving others and by generously sharing to others what You gave me. May I give all I can for you, happily and not expecting anything in return, but full of gratitude for everything you have been giving me. All these I ask in your mighty name, Amen.

Blessed Week!

In Christ,

Daily Readings

Monday of the Twenty-second Week in Ordinary Time

Lectionary: 431

We do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters,
about those who have fallen asleep,
so that you may not grieve like the rest, who have no hope.
For if we believe that Jesus died and rose,
so too will God, through Jesus,
bring with him those who have fallen asleep.
Indeed, we tell you this, on the word of the Lord,
that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord,
will surely not precede those who have fallen asleep.
For the Lord himself, with a word of command,
with the voice of an archangel and with the trumpet of God,
will come down from heaven,
and the dead in Christ will rise first.
Then we who are alive, who are left,
will be caught up together with them in the clouds
to meet the Lord in the air.
Thus we shall always be with the Lord.
Therefore, console one another with these words.

Responsorial Psalm

R. (13b) The Lord comes to judge the earth.
Sing to the LORD a new song;
sing to the LORD, all you lands.
Tell his glory among the nations;
among all peoples, his wondrous deeds.
R. The Lord comes to judge the earth.
For great is the LORD and highly to be praised;
awesome is he, beyond all gods.
For all the gods of the nations are things of nought,
but the LORD made the heavens.
R. The Lord comes to judge the earth.
Let the heavens be glad and the earth rejoice;
let the sea and what fills it resound;
let the plains be joyful and all that is in them!
Then shall all the trees of the forest exult.
R. The Lord comes to judge the earth.
Before the LORD, for he comes;
for he comes to rule the earth.
He shall rule the world with justice
and the peoples with his constancy.
R. The Lord comes to judge the earth.

Alleluia

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me;
he has sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had grown up,
and went according to his custom
into the synagogue on the sabbath day.
He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah.
He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written:

    The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
        because he has anointed me
            to bring glad tidings to the poor.
    He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives
        and recovery of sight to the blind,
            to let the oppressed go free,
    and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.

Rolling up the scroll,
he handed it back to the attendant and sat down,
and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him.
He said to them,
“Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.”
And all spoke highly of him
and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth.
They also asked, “Is this not the son of Joseph?”
He said to them, “Surely you will quote me this proverb,
‘Physician, cure yourself,’ and say, ‘Do here in your native place
the things that we heard were done in Capernaum.’”
And he said,
“Amen, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own native place.
Indeed, I tell you,
there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah
when the sky was closed for three and a half years
and a severe famine spread over the entire land.
It was to none of these that Elijah was sent,
but only to a widow in Zarephath in the land of Sidon.
Again, there were many lepers in Israel
during the time of Elisha the prophet;
yet not one of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.”
When the people in the synagogue heard this,
they were all filled with fury.
They rose up, drove him out of the town,
and led him to the brow of the hill
on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong.
But he passed through the midst of them and went away.

Lips and Action

The WORD today reminds me that words and actions should always go hand in hand.

Politics in our country is very dirty. There are a lot of corrupt officials. There are a lot of liars. There are a lot of killings. Injustice and indifference even during this pandemic. There are people who say one thing but do otherwise, or have his people do otherwise. What they are saying is not always in sync with what they are doing. This is similar to what Jesus said in the gospel.

The leaders at that time, the scribes and Pharisees, were diligently following the rules and commandments. However, their hearts were far from Jesus  - the culmination of the old testament, the very person their early church fathers was prophesying about. They were stuck with blind obedience to the law, and to their own personal interests, and did not want to welcome Jesus in their hearts.

The lips and the heart should always go hand in hand.

Thy say good things. They tell people to do good things. But they do not do good things. Yes, they follow the law, but blind obedience can lead us in the wrong path. Their hearts were far from Jesus. They did not want to hear him. They did not want to know and follow the truth - because the truth would remove them from the pedestal. They want to remain significant, important and respected, and they are more interested in keeping that than knowing the truth. This is why they did not make the effort to know Jesus.

It is easy to say we love God. It is easy to say good things about God. It is easy to proclaim him with words. However, God wants more. God wants concrete steps taken. God wants actions to go with our words. We cannot say we love God, but refuse to do good and help others because we feel they are responsible for their state. We cannot say we thank God for the blessings but refuse to share what we have. If we really love God, we should be ready and willing to step out of our comfort zone to bring him to others.

May we be awakened by Jesus’ words, and do our best to make our lips and heart agree with one another.

Father God,
Thank you for today. Thank you for another Sunday. Thank you for another day to rest and reflect. Thank you for your word. Thank you for the reminder. sorry for the times I act like the scribes and Pharisees. Sorry for the times I get contented with just praising you with my lips. Sorry for the times I make up a lot of excuses for not actually doing your work. Help me get on my feet and act. Help me live my faith. Help me proclaim you with my actions, with my life, and not just with my lips. Amen.

Blessed Sunday!

Daily Readings

Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Lectionary: 125

Reading I

Moses said to the people:
“Now, Israel, hear the statutes and decrees
which I am teaching you to observe,
that you may live, and may enter in and take possession of the land
which the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you.
In your observance of the commandments of the LORD, your God,
which I enjoin upon you,
you shall not add to what I command you nor subtract from it.
Observe them carefully,
for thus will you give evidence
of your wisdom and intelligence to the nations,
who will hear of all these statutes and say,
‘This great nation is truly a wise and intelligent people.’
For what great nation is there
that has gods so close to it as the LORD, our God, is to us
whenever we call upon him?
Or what great nation has statutes and decrees
that are as just as this whole law
which I am setting before you today?”

Responsorial Psalm

R. (1a)    One who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord.
Whoever walks blamelessly and does justice;
    who thinks the truth in his heart
    and slanders not with his tongue.
R. One who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord.
Who harms not his fellow man,
    nor takes up a reproach against his neighbor;
by whom the reprobate is despised,
    while he honors those who fear the LORD.
R. One who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord.
Who lends not his money at usury
    and accepts no bribe against the innocent.
Whoever does these things
    shall never be disturbed.
R. One who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord.

Dearest brothers and sisters:
All good giving and every perfect gift is from above,
coming down from the Father of lights,
with whom there is no alteration or shadow caused by change.
He willed to give us birth by the word of truth
that we may be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

Humbly welcome the word that has been planted in you
and is able to save your souls.

Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deluding yourselves.

Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this:
to care for orphans and widows in their affliction
and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

Alleluia

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
The Father willed to give us birth by the word of truth
that we may be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

When the Pharisees with some scribes who had come from Jerusalem
gathered around Jesus,
they observed that some of his disciples ate their meals
with unclean, that is, unwashed, hands.
—For the Pharisees and, in fact, all Jews,
do not eat without carefully washing their hands,
keeping the tradition of the elders.
And on coming from the marketplace
they do not eat without purifying themselves.
And there are many other things that they have traditionally observed,
the purification of cups and jugs and kettles and beds. —
So the Pharisees and scribes questioned him,
“Why do your disciples not follow the tradition of the elders
but instead eat a meal with unclean hands?”
He responded,
“Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written:
    This people honors me with their lips,
        but their hearts are far from me;
    in vain do they worship me,
        teaching as doctrines human precepts.

You disregard God’s commandment but cling to human tradition.”

He summoned the crowd again and said to them,
“Hear me, all of you, and understand.
Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person;
but the things that come out from within are what defile.

“From within people, from their hearts,
come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder,
adultery, greed, malice, deceit,
licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly.
All these evils come from within and they defile.”
