God of All

The WORD today reminds me that God is the God of everyone.

Nowadays, people usually specialize. They find their own specialty, their own niche. People with specialization usually get paid more. They are respected more. They do not do everything well, they do not address a lot of concerns – but they do something very well. The trend is being a specialist in something, and not be a generalist. However, this is not the same with God. He does not specialize. He is not the God of just one race or of one nationality. He is God of all.

God does not play favorites. He is fair to everyone. He is the God of everyone.

Today we celebrate the feast of the Epiphany. It is the manifestation of Christ to the gentiles (non-jews) as represented by the magi or three wise men. During that time, it was believed that the Jews were the only chosen people. They have favor with God. But Jesus’ coming changed that. We see in the second reading that Gentiles (non Jews) are also coheirs now. They are also members of Christ's body, of God's family. They are included. 

The first reading reminds us of God’s greatness. He should be loved and worshipped by all. By everyone. In everywhere. That is what he deserves. And that is what we should give him. It is a further strengthening of God being God of all.

Jesus coming reminds us that God is not just for the Jews. God is for all.

As we start the year, it is good to be reminded of this. Sometimes, when we feel that our prayers are not answered, we feel that God loves us less, or that God probably is not hearing our requests. We still have unanswered prayers. There are things we are still praying for, we are still waiting for. And sometimes, we ask prayers from other people who we think might have favor with God. But we are reminded today that God Is for all. God is for you and for me. We just have to trust in him. We just need to have faith.

Who is God for me? Is he someone near me and near my life? Do I believe that he hears my prayers? Do I have a personal relationship with him or is he too abstract for me? What is he telling me today?

May we start the year with the knowledge that I am important to God, as much as with others. And may this move me to love him more and encourage me to get to know him more.

Father God,

Thank you for today. Thank you for another day to live. Thank you for another Sunday. Thank you for being a God for everyone. Thank you for all the blessings. Thank you for being generous. Lord, sorry for not trusting in you enough, especially when things do not go as I am praying for. Sorry for forgetting how special I am and how much you love me. Lord, I surrender all my concerns to you. And I have faith that you would continue to take care of me and answer my prayers in your perfect time. I pray that I would always remember your love for me, and that and I would always feel how special I am to you. I will also do my best to know you more so I can love and serve you the way you want to be loved and served. Amen.

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea,

he was greatly troubled,
and all Jerusalem with him.

Actions

The WORD today reminds me that that my actions tell God that I love Him.

Words are important and powerful. However, sometimes It’s true that actions speak louder than words. Cliche, but true. What we say is important, but it should be backed up by what we do. This is important not only as we relate to others, but to God as well.

God puts a premium on our actions.

It is important to walk the talk. Lip service is not enough. In the first reading, we see that those who act in righteousness are righteous, and those who sin belong to the Devil. Actions, not words. You can say good things, but if you sin and not mean your words, you are not of God's flock.

In the gospel, we see examples of this. Jesus' first apostles just obeyed him when he called them. They just followed. No questions, just actions. And God honors that. He used them mightily. 

Our actions tell God that we love Him.

As we serve, it is important to have a mixture of both – speaking and acting. It is not enough to pray and sing praises to God, we should also get up and act as another way of worshiping and serving God. It is not enough to just do good works, we should also do so for love of God, for his glory.

How do I love and serve God? Do I just serve him with my lips, or do I also serve him with the actions of my life? How can I concretize more my love for Him?

May today be another day we can start worshiping, serving and loving Him with our words and actions.

Father God,

Thank you for today. Thank you for another day to live. Thank you for another weekend. Thank you for the reminder. Lord, sorry for the times I do not live my faith. Sorry for the times I do not live my love for you. Sorry for lip service worship and love. Help me live in a way pleasing to you. Help me live right. Help me act right and tell you how much I love you, that I choose you over the enemy, over the things of this world, over my own pleasures. May my actions, may my life, tell you how much I love you. Amen.

Gospel JN 1:35-42

John was standing with two of his disciples,

“What are you looking for?”
They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher),
“where are you staying?”
He said to them, “Come, and you will see.”
So they went and saw where he was staying,
and they stayed with him that day.
It was about four in the afternoon.
Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter,
was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus.
He first found his own brother Simon and told him,
“We have found the Messiah,” which is translated Christ.
Then he brought him to Jesus.
Jesus looked at him and said,
“You are Simon the son of John;
you will be called Cephas,” which is translated Peter.

Great Plans

The WORD today reminds me that God has great plans for me, and it will come to fruition in his perfect time.

Early on in the year, it is nice to be reminded that God has great plans for us. A lot made new year’s resolutions. A lot have plans and dreams they want to concretize and accomplish within this year. And as we do so, it is reassuring that God has great plans for us as well.

A lot of people take inspiration in Jeremiah 29:11, that God has plans to prosper us and for our good. It is inspiring indeed. However, In the first reading today, we see something inspiring as well. A lesser known verse but just as inspiring. we see God telling us what he told through John – what we shall be has not yet been revealed, but we know that when it is revealed, we will be like him. Wow. So affirming, and so inspiring. We may have a lot of plans, worries and concerns right now. We may have a lot of questions in our minds. But we are assured by God that when we finally understand things, when we see the plans of God come together, it will be great!

In the gospel, we see someone experiencing God’s plan come into fruition. John the Baptist was preparing the way for Jesus. It was a continuation of the gospel yesterday.  Probably they have not seen each other yet. But John knew what his purpose was, and he was faithful in doing it, despite people saying things about him and others persecuting him. He was faithful to God. He trusted in God’s plans. And in the gospel, we see God’s plan come into fruition when Jesus came to John to be baptized. The one he was preparing the way for came to him.

God knows what he is doing, we just need to trust in Him.

John may not have expected that. He was preparing the way for Jesus, yet it was Jesus himself who came to him to be baptized! That's how great God's plans are. That is how generous he is. That is how he rewards those who are focused on loving and serving Him, instead of on getting worldly rewards

What are my new year’s resolutions? What are my plans and goals for this year? Do I have worries or fears? What is God telling me today?

May we have faith in God and his great plans on us. 

Father God,

Thank you for today. Thank you for another day to live. Thank you for the beautiful reminder that you have things under control and you have great plans for me. Lord, sorry for worrying too much and for taking things into my hands. Sorry for being stressed with troubles.  Help me trust in you, your plans and your timing. As I start the year and make plans and goals, may I always remember to surrender to you and trust in you, knowing that your plans are always better than mine. Always. And that your plans will come into fruition in your perfect time. Amen.

If you consider that God is righteous,
you also know that everyone who acts in righteousness

The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

We do know that when it is revealed we shall be like him,

but the reason why I came baptizing with water
was that he might be made known to Israel.”

but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me,
‘On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain,
he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’

Prepare the Way

The WORD today reminds me that I should prepare the way for God.

Recognition is important to most people. We want to be affirmed and recognized. However, there are a lot of things at play in situations and events, and some who do a lot of work sometimes do not get the recognition they deserve. In concerts, for example, tech people set up the stage, lights and sound system, making sure everything is in order for the artist to use. They play an important role, but not always recognized. When they mess up, it affects the production in a big way. Good thing God does not act this way, he sees everything, especially what others do not.

God recognizes the little things we do for Him.

In the gospel, we saw that John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus. He knew his part. He knew he was unworthy. He knew his role. And he did it well. He did not seek affirmation or recognition. He just did what he knows God wanted him to do. And God was pleased with him.

This is a good reminder as we start the year. New beginnings. New resolutions. New goals. New dreams. New habits. We are also reminded to prepare the way for Christ. We are reminded to proclaim Christ. We are reminded to live Christ. We are reminded not to desire human recognition, and instead just do what God wants. We started preparing for Christmas, and we should not end now. We should continue to prepare the way for God in our lives and in through our lives.

What do I want to happen this year? What goals or resolutions have I put up? Is Serving and loving Christ included in my goals for the year? How can I prepare thr way for Christ in my life?

May we be encouraged to continue preparing the way for God through our lives.

Father God,

Thank you for today. Thank you for another day to live. Thank you for the reminder. Lord, sorry for the times I seek recognition from other people. Sorry for the times I want people to recognize and affirm me with what I do. Sorry for putting more weight on what other people think or say instead of what you do. Help me focus on what is right. Help me focus on you. Help me prepare the way for you. Help me proclaim you through my life. May my actions and decisions remind others how great and loving you are. Amen.

Who is the liar?
Whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ.
Whoever denies the Father and the Son, this is the antichrist.
Anyone who denies the Son does not have the Father,

Let what you heard from the beginning remain in you.
If what you heard from the beginning remains in you,
then you will remain in the Son and in the Father.
And this is the promise that he made us: eternal life.
I write you these things about those who would deceive you.

the anointing that you received from him remains in you,

But his anointing teaches you about everything and is true and not false;

Gospel JN 1:19-28

This is the testimony of John.
When the Jews from Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to him
to ask him, “Who are you?”
He admitted and did not deny it, but admitted,
“I am not the Christ.”
So they asked him,
“What are you then? Are you Elijah?”
And he said, “I am not.”
“Are you the Prophet?”
He answered, “No.”
So they said to him,
“Who are you, so we can give an answer to those who sent us?
What do you have to say for yourself?”
He said:
“I am the voice of one crying out in the desert,
‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’
 as Isaiah the prophet said.”
Some Pharisees were also sent.
They asked him,
“Why then do you baptize
if you are not the Christ or Elijah or the Prophet?”
John answered them,
“I baptize with water;
but there is one among you whom you do not recognize,
the one who is coming after me,
whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie.”
This happened in Bethany across the Jordan,
where John was baptizing.

Great 2020!

The WORD today reminds me that this is going to be a great year in the Lord.

It’s a new day! It’s a new year! And as we start this year, we are reminded that it is going to be another great year of the Lord! The first reading and psalm gives us a very beautiful blessing and prayer. And I believe that just as God asked Moses to bless the Israelites with this, he is also reminding us that this blessing is for us as well. As we start the year, it is good to be reminded of this blessing from God:

The LORD bless you and keep you!

The LORD let his face shine upon

you, and be gracious to you!

The LORD look upon you kindly and

give you peace!

What a very beautiful and powerful blessing!

God has concretized this blessing in the second reading. The reason for this season. God sent his only Son to save us from our sins, because he loves us. Because of this, we too can call God our loving and almighty father.

God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts,

crying out, “Abba, Father!”

So you are no longer a slave but a son,

and if a son then also an heir, through God

Just as we start the year, we also celebrate the Solemnity of Mama Mary, Mother of God. This is one of the three Holy Days of Obligation in our country (Aside from Dec 8 Immaculate Conception and Dec 25 Christmas). It is fitting that as we start the year, we remember Mama Mary, a loyal and humble servant of God. We again see a glimpse of her in the gospel. After saying Yes to God, she bore a Son and named him Jesus. At this point, she did not understand yet God’s plans as she kept all things in her heart, but still she continued to be faithful to God and did her part as the earthly mother of Christ. It is a good reminder for us, that as we start the year, even if we do not know and understand yet God’s plans, we just have to be like Mary and submit to God and do what he asks us to do. God has great plans for us, and we should just wait and cooperate, even if we do not understand and things are looking different from what we expected. What is God telling me today as I start the year? What are my fears and worries as I enter another year? Career concerns? Financial concerns? Health issues? Family matters? What can I learn from Mama Mary?

May we always remember that God will always bless us, and may this lead us to be like Mama Mary, who trusts and surrenders to God, despite not knowing his plans for us yet.

Father God,

Thank you for today. Thank you for another day to live! Thank you for another year! Thank you for all the great blessings of 2019! Thank you for all the challenges of 2019! Thank you for everything. As I start the year, I look forward to receiving more love, blessings, and challenges from you. Lord, I do not know what this year would bring, but I do hope that it would bring me closer to you. I do not know what will happen, but you do. I do not know what this year holds, but I know who holds everything in his hand. Lord, I trust in you. May the challenges and hardships, as well as the blessings and triumphs this year bring me to loving you more and may they strengthen my faith in you. I ask Lord that you hold my hand every step of the way. Never let go of me, and make me more and more like you. As you do, may I radiate you to others I encounter. Amen.

This story reminds me that even if God’s ways are not our ways, it is still the best, it is still better than what we have imagined, better than what we want for ourselves.

The Parable of the Three Trees

Once upon a mountain top, three little trees stood and  dreamed of what they wanted to become when they  grew up.
The first little tree looked up at the stars and said: "I  want to hold treasure. I want to be covered with gold  and filled with precious stones. I'll be the most  beautiful treasure chest in the world!" 

The second little tree looked out at the small stream  trickling by on it's way to the ocean. "I want to be  traveling mighty waters and carrying powerful kings.  I'll be the strongest ship in the world!" 

The third little tree looked down into the valley below  where busy men and women worked in a busy town.  "I don't want to leave the mountain top at all. I want to  grow so tall that when people stop to look at me,  they'll raise their eyes to heaven and think of God. I  will be the tallest tree in the world." 

Years passed. The rain came, the sun shone, and the  little trees grew tall. One day three woodcutters  climbed the mountain. 

The first woodcutter looked at the first tree and said,  "This tree is beautiful. It is perfect for me." With a  swoop of his shining axe, the first tree fell. "Now I  shall be made into a beautiful chest, I shall hold  wonderful treasure!" The first tree said. 

The second woodcutter looked at the second tree  and said, "This tree is strong. It is perfect for me."  With a swoop of his shining axe, the second tree fell.  "Now I shall sail mighty waters!" thought the second  tree. "I shall be a strong ship for mighty kings!"

The third tree felt her heart sink when the last  woodcutter looked her way. She stood straight and  tall and pointed bravely to heaven.  But the woodcutter never even looked up. "Any kind  of tree will do for me." He muttered. With a swoop  of his shining axe, the third tree fell. 

The first tree rejoiced when the woodcutter brought  her to a carpenter's shop. But the carpenter fashioned  the tree into a feedbox for animals. 

The once beautiful tree was not covered with gold,  nor with treasure. She was coated with saw dust and  filled with hay for hungry farm animals. 

The second tree smiled when the woodcutter took  her to a shipyard, but no mighty sailing ship was made  that day. Instead the once strong tree was hammered and sawed into a simple fishing boat. She was too small and  too weak to sail to an ocean, or even a river; instead  she was taken to a little lake.

The third tree was confused when the woodcutter cut  her into strong beams and left her in a lumberyard.  "What happened?" The once tall tree wondered. "All  I ever wanted was to stay on the mountain top and point  to God..." 

Many many days and night passed. The three trees  nearly forgot their dreams. 

But one night, golden starlight poured over the first tree  as a young woman placed her newborn baby in the  feedbox. 

"I wish I could make a cradle for him." her husband  whispered. The mother squeezed his hand and smiled  as the starlight shone on the smooth and the sturdy  wood. "This manger is beautiful" she said. 

And suddenly the first tree knew he was holding the  greatest treasure in the world. 

One evening a tired traveler and his friends crowded  into the old fishing boat. The traveler fell asleep as  the second tree quietly sailed out into the lake. Soon  a thundering and thrashing storm arose. The little tree  shuddered. She knew she did not have the strength to  carry so many passengers safely through with the wind  and the rain. 

The tired man awakened. He stood up, stretched out  his hand, and said, "Peace." The storm stopped as  quickly as it had begun.  And suddenly the second tree knew he was carrying the  king of heaven and earth. 

One Friday morning, the third tree was startled when her  beam were yanked from the forgotten woodpile. She  flinched as she was carried through an angry jeering  crowd. She shuddered when soldiers nailed a man's hands  to her.  She felt ugly and harsh and cruel. 

But on Sunday morning, when the sun rose and the  earth tremble with joy beneath her, the third tree knew  that God's love had changed everything.  It had made the third tree strong. And every time people thought of the third tree, they would think of God.  That was better than being the tallest tree in the world. 

So next time you feel down because you didn't get what   you want, just sit tight and be happy because God is   thinking of something better to give you

Reading 1 NM 6:22-27

The LORD said to Moses:
“Speak to Aaron and his sons and tell them:
This is how you shall bless the Israelites.
Say to them:
The LORD bless you and keep you!
The LORD let his face shine upon
you, and be gracious to you!
The LORD look upon you kindly and
give you peace!
So shall they invoke my name upon the Israelites,
and I will bless them."

Responsorial Psalm PS 67:2-3, 5, 6, 8

R. (2a) May God bless us in his mercy.
May God have pity on us and bless us;
may he let his face shine upon us.
So may your way be known upon earth;
among all nations, your salvation.

Reading 2 GAL 4:4-7

Brothers and sisters:
When the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son,
born of a woman, born under the law,
to ransom those under the law,
so that we might receive adoption as sons.
As proof that you are sons,
God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts,
crying out, “Abba, Father!”
So you are no longer a slave but a son,
and if a son then also an heir, through God.

In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets;
in these last days, he has spoken to us through the Son.

Gospel LK 2:16-21

The shepherds went in haste to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph,
and the infant lying in the manger.
When they saw this,
they made known the message
that had been told them about this child.
All who heard it were amazed
by what had been told them by the shepherds.
And Mary kept all these things,
reflecting on them in her heart.
Then the shepherds returned,
glorifying and praising God
for all they had heard and seen,
just as it had been told to them.

When eight days were completed for his circumcision,
he was named Jesus, the name given him by the angel
before he was conceived in the womb
