Pack Light

The WORD today reminds me that we need to pack light in life and just trust in God.

A few years ago, My wife and her sister joined a travel group and went to Mt Pulag. As she as preparing for the trip, she rearranged her bag a number of times. She wanted to travel light and bring only the essentials. There were a number of things she eventually discarded to optimize her backpack. I asked her if that would be enough since there are some things she did not bring anymore. She told me that the travel organizers would take care of other things, and they need not think of everything for the trip. This is how God wants us to travel in life. This is the faith God wants from us.

God wants us to pack light and travel light, and trust in Him with other things.

In the gospel, Jesus instructed his disciples to bring just what is necessary, the very basics. In St Mark’s account, Jesus told them not to take anything except a walking stick.

Why a walking stick…?

In those times, it was normal for people to have a walking stick. People, especially those advanced in age and those who often travel, have a walking stick. It helps them since they travel through far distances. It gives them additional strength by acting sort of their third leg, or something that would support their weary legs so as not to take all the weight of the body. It is also used to protect themselves from stray animals as they travel. Also, we see in the bible that God used the walking stick or staff to perform great things - Moses parted the red sea, led Israelites to victories in wars, and drew water out of a stone all by using a staff or a stick.

How light the disciples must have felt in that trip. No extra things to weigh them down.

However, in today’s day and age, we feel that as though we need a lot of things to survive. There are a lot of gadgets, smartphones and power banks, that we feel we need with us every time. When we travel, we bring with us a lot of these things. We take pictures and videos, and upload them at once to social media instead of savoring the moment. That’s why sometimes, instead of enjoying our journey and focusing on it, our attention is diverted because we have to think of what we brought, making sure nothing gets lost or left behind. We lose our focus from the really important things.

This is exactly what Jesus did not want to happen to his apostles. He wanted them to remain simple so they could focus on their task. More than that, they wanted them to have faith that God will provide as they stay focused on God. Divine Providence.

With my wife’s climb, true enough, the organizers took care of other things. Tents. Some meals. Etc. and in as much as the organizers came through with their word, how much with Heavenly Father? He keeps his word and will always be there to guide and protect us. He will always be there to provide for us. We just need to obey. To have faith. And to focus in Him.

As I look at my life, what are the extras that seem to be necessities? What are weighing me down? What things, people or habits are hindering me from focusing on God and on the task he has for me? What are hindering me from fully trusting and surrendering to God? Am I willing to let go?

May we be challenged and see what things we do not really need, the things that are taking our focus away from God and the task he has in store for us. Let us develop our faith in God’s providence – he still provides and will always do.

Father God,
Thank you for today. Thank you for another day to live. Thank you for another Sunday. Thank you for reminding us the importance of staying light – to rid ourselves of anything and everything that prevents us from focusing on you and from doing what you want us to do. Thank you for Pope Francis who reminds us and who lives this. Sorry for not always doing this. Sorry for wanting a lot. Sorry for focusing on the wrong things in life. I am sorry for allowing myself to be distracted, and for considering as necessary some of the extras in life. Lord, there are a lot of distractions in my life, and I ask that you help me keep my focus on you. Help me have faith and travel light as I take this journey towards you. I have faith that you will always provide, so I just need to focus on you and put you first. Amen.

Blessed Sunday!

In Christ,

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Lectionary: 102

Reading 1

Thus says the LORD:
 Rejoice with Jerusalem and be glad because of her,
 all you who love her;
 exult, exult with her,
 all you who were mourning over her!
 Oh, that you may suck fully
 of the milk of her comfort,
 that you may nurse with delight
 at her abundant breasts!
 For thus says the LORD:
 Lo, I will spread prosperity over Jerusalem like a river,
 and the wealth of the nations like an overflowing torrent.
 As nurslings, you shall be carried in her arms,
 and fondled in her lap;
 as a mother comforts her child,
 so will I comfort you;
 in Jerusalem you shall find your comfort.

 When you see this, your heart shall rejoice
 and your bodies flourish like the grass;
 the LORD's power shall be known to his servants.

Responsorial Psalm

R. (1) Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.
Shout joyfully to God, all the earth,
 sing praise to the glory of his name;
 proclaim his glorious praise.
Say to God, "How tremendous are your deeds!"
R. Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.
"Let all on earth worship and sing praise to you,
 sing praise to your name!"
Come and see the works of God,
 his tremendous deeds among the children of Adam.
R. Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.
He has changed the sea into dry land;
 through the river they passed on foot;
 therefore let us rejoice in him.
He rules by his might forever.
R. Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.
Hear now, all you who fear God, while I declare
 what he has done for me.
Blessed be God who refused me not
 my prayer or his kindness!
R. Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.

Reading 2

Brothers and sisters:
May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,
through which the world has been crucified to me,
and I to the world.
For neither does circumcision mean anything, nor does uncircumcision,
but only a new creation.
Peace and mercy be to all who follow this rule
and to the Israel of God.

From now on, let no one make troubles for me;
for I bear the marks of Jesus on my body.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit,
brothers and sisters. Amen.

Alleluia

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Let the peace of Christ control your hearts;
let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
At that time the Lord appointed seventy-two others
whom he sent ahead of him in pairs
to every town and place he intended to visit.
He said to them,
"The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few;
so ask the master of the harvest
to send out laborers for his harvest.
Go on your way;
behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves.
Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals;
and greet no one along the way.
Into whatever house you enter, first say,
'Peace to this household.'
If a peaceful person lives there,
your peace will rest on him;
but if not, it will return to you.
Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you,
for the laborer deserves his payment.
Do not move about from one house to another.
Whatever town you enter and they welcome you,
eat what is set before you,
cure the sick in it and say to them,
'The kingdom of God is at hand for you.'
Whatever town you enter and they do not receive you,
go out into the streets and say,
'The dust of your town that clings to our feet,
even that we shake off against you.'
Yet know this: the kingdom of God is at hand.
I tell you,
it will be more tolerable for Sodom on that day than for that town."

The seventy-two returned rejoicing, and said,
"Lord, even the demons are subject to us because of your name."
Jesus said, "I have observed Satan fall like lightning from the sky.
Behold, I have given you the power to 'tread upon serpents' and  scorpions
and upon the full force of the enemy and nothing will harm you.  Nevertheless, do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you,
but rejoice because your names are written in heaven."

Time For Everything

The WORD today reminds me that there is a time for everything.

When I was new to corporate life, I was blessed to be part of a good team. People were friendly - my teammates and even our manager at that time. I felt at ease and comfortable with my team. However, I was surprised when I attended my first team meeting/conference call. I saw the other side of my teammates and my boss. They were very serious and professional. They taught me that indeed, there is a time for everything – a time to be friendly, casual and warm, and a time to be serious, professional and to mean business. This is what Jesus is telling us in the gospel.

There is a time for everything.

When the disciples of John, who always fast, asked Jesus why his disciples don’t fast, his reply was that there is a time for his disciples to fast, but not yet now since Jesus was still with them. Jesus is a reason to celebrate and they should learn all they can from him. Eventually, they will fast.

There is a time for everything. And he is reminding us that this applies until now. There is a time to be happy, have fun, and celebrate God’s goodness and love, but there is also a time to be serious, to be sorry for our sins and confess, and to fast. There should be a time to spend time with family, work, self and with loved ones, but also a time for God – of loving, praising and serving Him. There is a time to pray and wait for God’s plans to come true in our lives, and a time to enjoy it and thank him for it. There is a time for problems and challenges, but a time to enjoy victory and blessings from God as well. Too much of one is not good. There should always be a balance.

It is probably especially important during this pandemic to remember this. There is a time for everything. A time to worry and be paranoid enough that it leads us to follow instructions, avoid contact with others, and keep ourselves  clean and healthy. There is a time to act and help other people by sharing our blessings in whatever way we can. There is a time to rest, reflect, and pray. There is a time to try to enjoy despite the situation. There should be a balance.

Do I believe in God’s timing and his perfect plan? Do  respect his timing, his plans, and his wisdom? Do I make the most of my time, or do i just focus on what I want and not make time for God?

May we remember how important it is to know the proper time for everything, and trust in God’s perfect timing.

Father God,
Thank you for today. thank you for another day to live. Thank you for another weekend. Thank you for another chance to love and serve you. Thank you for the reminder. Lord, sorry for not giving you the time you deserve. Sorry for just doing and wanting things for myself. Sorry for not trusting in you. I ask that you give me the knowledge to know the right time for doing things. Always remind me that there is a time for everything. Remind me that I should have a balanced life. I know you hold everything at the palm of your hand, and I just trust in your great plans for me. May I always strive to have a balanced life for you. May I never forget you amidst the busyness of life. Amen.

Blessed Weekend!

In Christ,

Saturday of the Thirteenth Week in Ordinary Time

Lectionary: 382

Reading 1

Thus says the LORD:
On that day I will raise up
the fallen hut of David;
I will wall up its breaches,
raise up its ruins,
and rebuild it as in the days of old,
That they may conquer what is left of Edom
and all the nations that shall bear my name,
say I, the LORD, who will do this.
Yes, days are coming,
says the LORD,
When the plowman shall overtake the reaper,
and the vintager, him who sows the seed;
The juice of grapes shall drip down the mountains,
and all the hills shall run with it.
I will bring about the restoration of my people Israel;
they shall rebuild and inhabit their ruined cities,
Plant vineyards and drink the wine,
set out gardens and eat the fruits.
I will plant them upon their own ground;
never again shall they be plucked
From the land I have given them,
say I, the LORD, your God.
R. (see 9b) The Lord speaks of peace to his people.
I will hear what God proclaims;
the LORD–for he proclaims peace to his people.
Near indeed is his salvation to those who fear him,
glory dwelling in our land.
R. The Lord speaks of peace to his people.
Kindness and truth shall meet;
justice and peace shall kiss.
Truth shall spring out of the earth,
and justice shall look down from heaven.
R. The Lord speaks of peace to his people.
The LORD himself will give his benefits;
our land shall yield its increase.
Justice shall walk before him,
and salvation, along the way of his steps.
R. The Lord speaks of peace to his people.

Alleluia

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord;
I know them, and they follow me.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel

The disciples of John approached Jesus and said,
“Why do we and the Pharisees fast much,
but your disciples do not fast?”
Jesus answered them, “Can the wedding guests mourn
as long as the bridegroom is with them?
The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them,
and then they will fast.
No one patches an old cloak with a piece of unshrunken cloth,
for its fullness pulls away from the cloak and the tear gets worse.
People do not put new wine into old wineskins.
Otherwise the skins burst, the wine spills out, and the skins are ruined.
Rather, they pour new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.”

Jesus Calling Sinners

The WORD today reminds me that God is always calling sinners, whatever state we may be in.

I remember that when I was little, I used to look forward to my parents arriving home. I get excited when I hear the car’s horn, knowing it was them. However, there was one time I broke a glass something, and when I heard the car’s horn, I was so scared because I thought they would be mad if they find out what I broke. I think this is a usual behavior. When children make mistakes, they are usually afraid to go to their parents. When they break something in the house, they are not really excited to see their parents. When they have low grades at school, they are not exactly looking forward to telling their parents. We want to make our parents proud and happy, and having done these things are necessarily good news for them. They will not be happy and proud of these things, but they still love their children. If our parents are like this, how much more God?

God does not need you to change before he loves you.

I believe that God's church is not a museum of saints, but a hospital for sinners. God does not need saintly and godly people. He makes you one. He takes in sinners and loves them. He loves them so much that they become filled with his love. And they slowly change to be better people. However, in as much as God aims that we become saints, he does not require it from us as we come to him.

The gospel says that Jesus called Matthew, a sinner, a tax collector and went to his place. Not only that, he dined with Matthew and his friends and co sinners. And when people were murmuring, he defended them, saying that he came to call sinners. That he is there to extend love and mercy to these sinners.

God is calling us whatever state we are in

Jesus called Matthew as he was doing his usual work. He was doing something bad. He does that to us too. We may be sinners. We may have issues and concerns. We may have unresolved things in our lives. God does not ask that we change, clean ourselves and fix our lives before we come to him. God is just asking us to follow him. To come to him. And to allow him to love us. And as we experience his love. His peace. His forgiveness. Then we will slowly be transformed and become more like him.

Am I willing to come to God as I am? Do I set things, situations and conditions first before I go come to God? Do I believe that God will accept me for what I am? How can I come to God today?

May we humble ourselves and follow God wherever we are right now.

Father God,
Thank you for today. Thank you for another day to live. Thank you for another chance to love and serve you. Thank you for another reminder. Lord, sorry for the times I stay away from you. Sorry for thinking that I have to clean myself first and fix myself first before I come to you. Sorry for all my excuses. Help me be like Matthew who followed you. No matter where I am and what I am doing, no matter how imperfect my life is, I will stand up, follow you, and allow you to love and transform me. Amen.

Blessed Day!

Daily Readings

Friday of the Thirteenth Week in Ordinary Time

Lectionary: 381

Hear this, you who trample upon the needy
and destroy the poor of the land!
“When will the new moon be over,” you ask,
“that we may sell our grain,
and the sabbath, that we may display the wheat?”
We will diminish the containers for measuring,
add to the weights,
and fix our scales for cheating!
We will buy the lowly man for silver,
and the poor man for a pair of sandals;
even the refuse of the wheat we will sell!”

On that day, says the Lord GOD,
I will make the sun set at midday
and cover the earth with darkness in broad daylight.
I will turn your feasts into mourning
and all your songs into lamentations.
I will cover the loins of all with sackcloth
and make every head bald.
I will make them mourn as for an only son,
and bring their day to a bitter end.

Yes, days are coming, says the Lord GOD,
when I will send famine upon the land:
Not a famine of bread, or thirst for water,
but for hearing the word of the LORD.
Then shall they wander from sea to sea
and rove from the north to the east
In search of the word of the LORD,
but they shall not find it.

Responsorial Psalm

(Matthew 4:4) One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.
Blessed are they who observe his decrees,
who seek him with all their heart.
R. One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.
With all my heart I seek you;
let me not stray from your commands.
R. One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.
My soul is consumed with longing
for your ordinances at all times.
R. One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.
The way of truth I have chosen;
I have set your ordinances before me.
R. One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.
Behold, I long for your precepts;
in your justice give me life.
R. One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.
I gasp with open mouth
in my yearning for your commands.
R. One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.

Alleluia

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened,
and I will give you rest, says the Lord.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel

As Jesus passed by,
he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post.
He said to him, “Follow me.”
And he got up and followed him.
While he was at table in his house,
many tax collectors and sinners came
and sat with Jesus and his disciples.
The Pharisees saw this and said to his disciples,
“Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
He heard this and said,
“Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do.
Go and learn the meaning of the words,
I desire mercy, not sacrifice.
I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.”
