Blessed

The WORD today (see http://usccb.org/bible/readings/101015.cfm) reminds me that being blessed is dependent on us.

There are a lot of things in this world that we cannot control. There are a lot of things we cannot choose. Sometimes, we think that being lucky or privileged is not dependent on us, rather on the situation we are born in. in the worldly sense, it is sometimes true. You cannot choose your family, and you are lucky if you will be born to a rich, powerful and influential family. That’s the privilege you get since birth. However, there are things we can control, and Jesus in the gospel tells us.

We cannot control a lot of things, but we can control how we react.

In the gospel, a woman was telling how blessed Jesus’ earthly mother is. The womb that carried and the breasts that nursed. Not just his mother, but actually the woman was telling how blessed Jesus’ family is. Of course, who would not be proud to have Jesus in their family. However, Jesus tells the woman that it does not end there. That we too can be blessed and experience all (or even greater) that his family experiences – if we choose to hear and observe God’s word.

There is an open invitation for us. To be called God’s children. To be part of his family. The invitation does not require for us to be born to a great and influential family. Rather, the condition is coming from us – if we really want to be his family. If we really want to be blessed – if we really listen and do his work here on earth.

May we realize the opportunity God gives us, and make the most out of it.

Father God,

Thank you for today. Thank you for another day to live. thank you for another chance to love and serve you. thank you for another weekend. Lord, thank you for the opportunity you give me – to be blessed, and to be part of your family. Thank you for the invitation. Help me live it. You know I love you and I want to be blessed, and I ask that you help me show it. May I live telling you how much I love you. May I live doing your work on earth. May my life give you glory and spread your kingdom on earth. Amen.

Saturday of the Twenty-seventh Week in Ordinary Time

Reading 1 Jl 4:12-21

 

Thus says the LORD:
Let the nations bestir themselves and come up
to the Valley of Jehoshaphat;
For there will I sit in judgment
upon all the neighboring nations.

Apply the sickle,
for the harvest is ripe;
Come and tread,
for the wine press is full;
The vats overflow,
for great is their malice.
Crowd upon crowd
in the valley of decision;
For near is the day of the LORD
in the valley of decision.
Sun and moon are darkened,
and the stars withhold their brightness.
The LORD roars from Zion,
and from Jerusalem raises his voice;
The heavens and the earth quake,
but the LORD is a refuge to his people,
a stronghold to the children of Israel.

Then shall you know that I, the LORD, am your God,
dwelling on Zion, my holy mountain;
Jerusalem shall be holy,
and strangers shall pass through her no more.
And then, on that day,
the mountains shall drip new wine,
and the hills shall flow with milk;
And the channels of Judah
shall flow with water:
A fountain shall issue from the house of the LORD,
to water the Valley of Shittim.
Egypt shall be a waste,
and Edom a desert waste,
Because of violence done to the people of Judah,
because they shed innocent blood in their land.
But Judah shall abide forever,
and Jerusalem for all generations.
I will avenge their blood,
and not leave it unpunished.
The LORD dwells in Zion.
