The WORD today (See http://usccb.org/bible/readings/060213.cfm) reminds me how important it is to give and take.
There is a story about the Dead Sea and the Sea of Galilee. They get the water from the same source – the River Jordan. However, the dead sea has no life in it (hence the name) while the sea of Galilee is full of fish. How come? The dead sea receives water and stores it, while the sea of galilee receives water and gives it away.
The readings today shows us how important giving and receiving is.
In the first reading, while Abram received the blessing of the king, he gave a tenth of everything to the king. In the second reading, Paul gave away and shared to the corinthians the message and knowledge he received from God. In the gospel, Jesus asked the people to give what they had and after he blessed them, they received more than what they gave.
We cannot hold on to everything. We cannot just receive and receive. We cannot contain God’s blessings and goodness. We should learn how to give, how to share. Only when we find joy in giving and sharing will God be able to work mightily in our lives, only then can he multiply what we gave so it can be a blessing to a lot of people, and in turn, only then can we receive more, so that we can continue to give away more.
To whom much is given, much is required.
Father God,
Thank you for today. Thank you for your love that enabled you to give your life to us. Thank you for your Body and Blood which we celebrate today, which continue to fill us up and make us remember how loved we are, and how great our loving God is. Father God, I pray that you give me the desire to have more of you, to be full of you, so that I can give and share you to others. Give me the desire for the Eucharist – for I know it will nourish not only my body, but most importantly, my spirit. Amen.
Blessed Sunday!
In Christ,
-g-
